Hospitality Committee

The Hospitality Committee is responsible for Coffee Hour, which takes place every Sunday after church. This includes ordering the coffee and other supplies for the kitchen, and making sure that there are always volunteers to provide the refreshments.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Spencer Salzberg at smsalzberg@hotmail.com.

Coffee Hour Instructions for Hosts:

  • For calculating the quantity of refreshments that you should bring, we can usually assume that about 80 to 100 people will stay for Coffee Hour. (A container of cookies usually contains about 30 cookies, we’ve found, so if you would like to bring cookies, 4 or 5 containers is adequate.)
  • Please also bring with you a quart of whole milk, a quart of 1% milk, one quart of soy milk, one quart of apple juice, and a quart of half and half. The coffee itself is provided by the church.
  • Some refreshment snack suggestions you might consider include the following. It’s your call: fresh cut fruit, cookies, pita, hummus, cheese, baba ghanoush, chips, salsa, biscuits, triscuits, peanut butter, sliced apples, biscuits, guacamole, rugalach, grapes, fresh cut vegetables, danish pastry.

BEFORE THE SERVICE (please try to start by about 10:30 a.m. - it can be too noisy if the set-up is done during the service):

  • Make sure that Lonnie has set up the coffee urns, plugged them in and switched them on (the decaf urn has a wooden D on it, and the hot water urn has a T on it).
  • Put the milk in the fridge and the snacks on plates on the table, covered with napkins.
  • Look for leftovers - there is sometimes food in the fridge, left over from last Sunday, or from events that have been held in the building, and it is OK to use them up at Coffee Hour. Please throw away any leftovers that are past their prime.
  • Put the large trash can outside the kitchen near the table.
  • Get out the following items, from the cabinet to the right of the serving counter, or the cabinets or
    drawers under the counter:
  • MUGS (put them where you can reach them easily to fill them),
TEA BAGS (put on counter where people can reach them),
    SUGAR and SUGAR SUBSTITUTE,
STIRRERS (extra boxes are in the middle drawer),
a SMALL PLATE or bowl for empty sugar packets and used tea bags,
SIGNS and BASKETS for donations (kept in the right-hand drawer); please display prominently, one on the counter and one on the table with the snacks.

AT THE END OF THE SERVICE:

  • Before starting to serve coffee, get the milk out of the fridge and put it on the table,
  • Serve the coffee (leave room in the mugs for milk),
  • When most people have finished their coffee, collect empty mugs, plates, etc., and put them in the dishwasher.
  • Please put all items back where you found them (as close as possible) after use.
